barefeet blues

Description

I dont wear shoes very often. I walk barefoot nearly all year round, and only put on shoes when its very wet and cold, or when i absolutely have to. Sure there are occassions when the mood will strike and ill wear one of my amazing pairs of shoes, but in summer, that doesnt happen often.

Its not that i dont appreciate a good looking shoe. In fact, i love shoes! there are some really stunning ones, and i can appreciate them and often contemplate purchasing them. i just prefer being barefoot. Theres all sorts of research out there that shows that being barefoot is better for you. Its better for your walk, posture, knees, joints, back etc. sure, to some its a tad hippy-ish, but its just part of who i am.

Being in Cape Town in summer, there and many barefeet around. Its the way to be. In fact most South African kids grow up being barefoot 80% of the time. (until we’re forced into school shoes). barefeet, bikinis, dresses, the beach, lifesaving, kids… its all goes together. its just natural!

Then today, a security guard at Century City/Canal Walk, comes and gives me a lecture about being barefoot in the mall. B and i had just finished shopping, i was waiting for him to get change from Cinnabon so that we could leave and be on our way. (by this stage we;ve been there for 90 minutes and ive been shoe-less the entire time). The guard comes up to me and asks why im not wearing shoes. I tell him that I almost never wear shoes, and that i prefer being barefoot.

He then says that its not allowed in the mall! I point out that theres not a single sign anywhere saying that shoes must be worn! He says that on the escualtors, theres a sign warning that people with barefeet must not use the esculators. I pointed out to him that i had both my kids in a trolley and had been using the lifts, so esculators were not a problem. He then threatend to kick me out of the mall for being barefoot!! (There were many other barefeet around, i wasnt the only one.) He asked again about me being shoe=less, and i mentioned the health benefits in brief, and that i just dont wear shoes. He then accused me lying! he outright called me a liar and said that all women lie!

jeepers, im still fuming! B reckons its all a bit silly and that the guy was hitting on me. (i disagree!) My brothers cale up with a great plan in protest. we get a whole group of our friends to run around the mall barefoot, going up and down all the esculators and just randomly run through the mall.

In a place where theft is easy, kids get lost etc… he threatens to kick me out for being barefoot!! Come on!!
