its been a seriously hectic last few weeks! 3 weeks to be exact. our beautiful baby girl is now 3 weeks old! in some ways, i feel as though she has always been here, in others, it feels so brand new still.
We have all been going through the adjustment phase. the kids have handled it beautifully. we have had the occasional melt-down and the clinginess, but not too much rebellion and nothing directed at Kyla. I have heard stories of kids asking their parents to take the baby back to hospital, older siblings trying to hurt the new baby and so forth. but our kids have been so loving towards Kyla, that i think theyre more likely to smother her with love and affection. its all so darn cute.
Kyla is doing amazingly. she is such a peaceful, relaxed baby… well as long as mommy is around. she tends to get a bit panicky if im gone too long. in fact for the last 2 days, when i put her down asleep she wakes up. shes been pretty ma-vas but then again its been an interesting week, so i dont blame her… oh and shes only 3 weeks old! but my goodness she is beautiful, like absolutely gorgeous.
last week, both jessie and jack were sick. jack came down with the same temperatures that jessie had just before i gave birth. then jessie seemed to be getting croup again. so i made a paed appointment for jack as he was really struggling. but after a very rough night due to jessie’s coughing, we decided that she was worse so i took her instead.
i chatted with the paed and said that it seemed to be her 3rd episode of croup for the winter. the paed was very worried as jess coughed the entire time we were there. it was a very nasty, horrible, hacking cough. The paed wanted jessie admitted to see if we could find what was causing the croup, and to have xrays and a nasal swab done. I was shocked! i had just expected meds and to go home. i was in a bit of a state. jack was asleep at home, bryan was a bit behind on work, i kept thinking; “i dont have time for this”. So we did what we needed to do, and things moved quickly… huge advantage to being in the hospital where your mom is in charge! things happen fast when the matron is around.
jessie handled her first nebulizer like a star, the xrays were also pretty easy. But the nasal swab!! my heart broke for her, she just screamed and screamed. it must be horrendous. the physio inserts a tube into your nose and down into the back of the throat and suctions out some mucus. ouch and gross!
the xrays came back and showed the jess had the beginning of pneumonia. so that opened door number 3: a night in hospital. jessie was on a nebulizer every 3 hours, and had 7 different meds. she was such a champ! she didnt cry, didnt fuss, just carried on as normal. kyla and i stayed with her for the night. B and jack came to visit and when they left for the night, the wheels came off for jessie and jack. jessie wanted b to stay, and jack wanted mommy, but we soldiered on. it was very hard for me, i cried more than a few tears, and then picked up my wheelbarrow and kept pushing.
jessie slept quite well, i did not. with kids crying and nurses in and out all night, it was really tough to get decent sleep. hospital is no place for rest!
we were discharged the next morning, with jessie sounding much better. jack had also been at the doctor for his temperature and his sore throat. we left hospital with a travelling pharmacy and were all very happy to be together at home.
its been almost exactly a year since she was in hospital with the Rotavirus.
