No, this is not a review on the book. I haven’t read it and I have no intention of reading it. These are just my ramblings and thoughts on the hype surrounding it.
We all know that the book is classified as erotica. We know that it has been read by millions of women worldwide. We know that there are many women who have fallen a little ( or a lot) for Christian Grey.
I feel as though we are missing something fundamentally huge. How is reading it any different to our husbands/boyfriends viewing p0rn? How would we as women feel, knowing that our significant other was engaging with p0rn? Personally, I’d be livid! It would hurt me deeply and do substantial damage to my ego. When getting intimate, I’d question wether he was thinking of me or something/someone he’d seen.
Yet somehow, women reading this book is “ok”. Nevermind that one has to read the words and forms their own imagery in their minds of what’s happening. Nevermind that it’s then discussed at length with other women, reinforcing what’s been read and imagined.
Yes, I am aware that it’s not the first of its kind. The Collins’ have been writing this kind of thing for years. Heck, even Shakespeare and the Bible have some raunchy parts. But, this book has been wildly accepted by many. It is breaking the mould of what women en masse read and discuss and share.
We worry about men and p0rn, perhaps we should focus on what we’re reading and how we respond to it.
